On the other hand, given the crowd at Kaffee Alt Wien, and the impressive number of meals served in one evening, should this mediocre experience come as a surprise? The house Kaiserschmarren, the Viennese version of the pancakes, coarsely cut, lightly caramelized, and brought to our table directly in a cast-iron pan, accompanied with stewed plum, a lengthy 40 minute after our table had been cleared (note that owing to the “20-minute wait” caveat mentioned on the menu, we placed our order at the same time as our entrees). All in all, a botched up recipe bereft of love and passion, served in a skinny portion, but at a hefty price, close to 18 Euros. Yes, in all fairness, the sauce was palatable, but the dice of meat were still stringy and rubbery. A good goulash consists of very slowly cooked chuck, until the meat melts in your mouth-a Hungarian version of the French beef bourguignon if you will. Taken aback by this surprisingly meager portion, I hailed our waiter to confirm the size of the portion. Five small dice of a cheap cut of beef, sunk in a brown, mildly spiced, and pleasantly sweet sauce. What was served minutes later was, however, “ganz klein” (really tiny). This is dinner, so let’s go for the “Großes Gulasch”. The “groß” (the big portion), or the “klein” (the small portion), asked the waiter. the house goulash, “prepared with love, passion and the best, hand-diced beef from the Austrian heifer”, said the menu. Things had started well, though-unpretentious setting, friendly atmosphere, and a bubbly waiter. This is how I felt after my dinner, last night, at Kaffee Alt Wien. We have all left a restaurant, one day, with the strong, unpleasant feeling to have been scammed. It’s a busy place, surely an indication of the quality and authenticity of the food. I hope the service was simply isolated to one individual, who I wish I had received her name. Rather than deal with her again, we decided to go home. I was told the server we had would need to get it. I wanted dessert- which looked wonderful and returned to the hostess station (where a dessert case is located) and asked to purchase a piece of cake. The served checked in, with bill in hand, which my husband took up to pay. We asked for the plate to be reheated and when I also had to ask fir mustard and a glass of water, was welcomed with irritated non verbals. The server also forgot to bring us plates. They received steaming hot dishes that looked amazing. A table of four was seated in front of us 15 minutes after we were seated. The pumpkin soup was amazing and the house dressing equally tasty. We ordered the German feast for two, with a salad and a soup. We were early but waited 10 minutes after the confirmed reservation time. We waited at the bar for our table, which was slightly delayed. There are many options, although they were out of the beer my husband wanted so we opted for something different. We were 10 minutes early so took a peak at the happy hour menu. Upon arrival, we noticed there was live accordion music and happy hour drinks from 4-7pm. The restaurant is closed on Sunday and Monday so with the timing of our trip, opted for a Tuesday evening. This restaurant came highly recommended and it was suggested to make a reservation.
